(July 2024) Readers of a certain age will remember a hit song from the mid-1980s called, “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades.”
That same blinding optimism is shown by Dr. Jacqui Taylor, CEO of FlyingBinary and an expert on smart cities.
“When people ask if we have a bright future, I say, ‘You will need sunglasses,’ she tells Huawei Editor-in-Chief Gavin Allen in a new interview for Transform Talks.
Still, challenges loom large. The smart cities of tomorrow will need a new social contract, one based on trust. Technology is just one factor contributing to eventual success.
“Civic leaders don't care about technology. They want it to work,” Dr. Taylor says. “They want to be sure of the outcomes it creates. They want to be sure of the social contract they have with their citizens.
“We should be working out how our technology can be deployed and what difference it can make…The focus should be societal, not technological.”
